I Was Here

I Was Here - Gayle Forman

This was enjoyable, though a bit rough to read.

It was hard to learn, with Cody, that there was so much her best friend had been keeping from her, quite a bit of which is not fully explained until the very end.

For reference, I totally saw early on not only that Meg

was suffering from severe depression and that her bout of mono was a depressive episode, I saw the depression in her mother early on as well.

(show spoiler)

Even without that being a huge revelation to me, this was a good read about someone trying to put the pieces of their life back together after a tragedy and about a girl realizing that sometimes you don't know even those you think are closest to you.

Both girls were keeping stuff from each other, and the way Cody deals with Meg's secrets is by attempting to first find them all and then explain them. She does an excellent job of piecing together an awful lot of her best friend's life before she killed herself, and the process seems to be cathartic for her and teaches her a lot about herself as well.

I wasn't blown away by this book, but I sympathized with Cody's desire to explain something that is kind of inexplicable and with her tenacity on the subject. It was a decent read, and probably would have been an even better one for someone who reads and enjoys more contemporary YA than I do. I felt like there have been other books on the subject that have touched me more, though that is one of those personal things that has no quantifiable meaurement. At any rate, I don't regret reading it, though I'm unlikely to read it again.
